Title of Work: Different, But same 1,2

Country: South Korea

Q & A

Q: How do you feel about your achievement in the BISTA Award?

A: First of all, I think it's an honor to win the gold medal at the BISTA Award, which is held for the first time.

Some of my acquaintances participated in the BISTA Awards, and I didn't expect to win such a high award because there were so many good works.

Q: What is the theme of your work?

A: The theme of this entry was designed under the theme of harmony between animals and humans in celebration of the upcoming World Animal Day on Oct. 4.

Q: What is the intention of your work?

A: The poster inserted an image that could impact the image of animal & human harmony in the center of the screen, and filled the surrounding background with radial lines and pictures of animals that fit the poster concept to highlight the subject. Also, each poster was designed in a series under the theme of harmony with marine animals and harmony with snails, which can be expected to have a greater visual effect by creating a strong color contrast between each other. In the future, there will be a variation on the theme of harmony with birds, land animals, and other various animals, in addition to harmony with marine life and snails.

Describe the process of creating your work.

Q: If you describe the production process of this design?

A: This poster, which started with the idea that it would be fun to work on a specific anniversary, seems to have had a lot of worries about how to highlight the theme part after first working on the theme part image under the concept of human & animal harmony. Radial wires were thought to be the most effective in highlighting the theme part through various attempts, and in addition to the theme part, graphic elements were added to each line to create attractions in the poster, and working with as much detail as possible, it took longer than expected.

Q: Describe expected effects of your work.

A: Through this poster, I want to raise awareness of animal protection, respect animal rights and welfare more, and convey the message of coexistence with animals.

Q: What was your favorite subject in your school?

A: The most interesting class in college was the graphic design class, and I think I had a lot of fun expressing my thoughts on one poster in my own style.

Q: What is your design philosophy?

A: Design is not just plausible, but I think the meaning in it is important.

Recently, thanks to AI, even ordinary people who are not designers can create high-quality works. Thanks to this, I think design has become very up-leveled, and in this

era when everyone is good at drawing, I think the part that can differentiate them from others is meaningful.

Q: Who is your design mentor?

A: There have been so many people who have been design mentors while studying design, but recently, I think I have learned and relied on Professor Eun-jin Yu of Namseoul University the most.

Q: What do you think of the most important part of design?

A: As I mentioned earlier when we talked about design philosophy, I think meaning is the most important thing after that if you have a certain degree of visual transmission in design. Reminding of the forgotten things or rediscovering the things that seemed to be used for granted in everyday life. In this era when AI can create high-quality works, I think the most important thing is meaning.

Q: What is your project that you dream about?

A: My dream is to be a high quality designer. I want to be a person who is not behind the trend, has my own firm philosophy on design, and can easily teach me about design.

Q: Describe your best work you designed in detail.

A: Right now, I think this poster that won the gold prize at the BISTA Award is the best.

This is because it is complete, has a high visual impact, has the potential for various variations, and has a good meaning. However, since it is still growing in real time, I believe that I will be able to produce better BEST works soon.

Q: Where do you get your design inspiration?

A: I get ideas for planning through the news, and graphic inspiration seems to come from so many different places: schools, exhibitions, the internet, everyday life, games, book covers, movies, animations, etc.

Q: Who among your contemporaries today do you most admire?

A: I have the most respect for my father, because he is the person who creates opportunities for me to take the path of design, always motivates me, and can correct my mistakes most closely.

Q: What is your future goal as a designer?

A: It's the same as my dream. If I think about it in more detail, I want to become an educator. It's because I feel more enjoyable when I pass on the knowledge I know to my team members or juniors, and when someone has a higher level of planning and graphic skills with my help, I feel like I'm more excited than when I make my work.

Silver Award

Name: Valentina Karen

Title of Work: Seraya Berkata

Country: Indonesia

Q & A

Q: How do you feel about your achievement in the BISTA Award?

A: I'm honestly very surprised, as I didn't expect to get this high in the rankings. I am extremely very grateful and appreciative of achieving the silver award, and it has given me more confidence towards my work.

Q: What is the theme of your work?

A: The theme of my work centers a vintage theme, where it’s still loved from generations alike. I felt like it represents inclusivity well as it’s a theme that generations can agree to like and are at peace with, aside from other qualities.

Q: What is the intention of your work?

A: I want to show inclusivity and bring people together through culture and celebrations, as today we’re often so fixated on racial and ethnical qualities of differences, where it might also be separation from different generations. Culture has always brought people together, and I wish to represent that well in my work with its ability to create dynamic visual styles for all celebrations possible.

Q: Describe the process of creating your work.

A: I spent most of my time creating the base logo through brainstorming and experimenting, as it will be the main elements to keep a consistent visual despite the elements and the colors being drastically different. I searched up common and well-liked celebrations and cultures, and concluded with vintage being the main theme, and created dynamic styles for other celebrations. I made the colors vibrant and colorful to represent each theme well.

Q: Describe expected effects of your work.

A: I expect people to see the fun colors and elements of the dynamic logos representing celebrations. I don’t think inclusivity is what comes up to mind at first, but the visualized culture and celebrations bring that uniting quality.

Q: What was your favorite subject in your school?

A: At school there was no design or art subjects, although it was my hobby and spare time. My favourite subject would be mathematics as my best subject as I like the process of learning new formulas, rules and methods to solve questions and problems.

Q: What is your design philosophy?

A: My design philosophy is rooted in the creativity of the designer. I believe that design should express an idea clearly and serve a purpose. Whether the design is simplistic, functional, or focused on usability, it should always have meaning and intent, and which the meaning is shaped by the designer's unique creativity, views, likes, and preferences.

Q: Who is your design mentor?

A: My design mentor is Dodi Nursaiman, a professor in BINUS University who taught me in several design subjects. He reached out to me on participating in this competition as he saw potential with my work. He has been a very great mentor and guide, and has given me solid critiques of my work for improvements.

Q: What do you think of the most important part of design?

A: The most important part of design is its ability to create interesting visuals or functions that make life easier and better to see, live and experience. Design can refer to so many aspects in our lives, and it has improved our quality of life significantly and we would never come this far without good design.

Q: What is your project that you dream about?

A: Although I don’t have a specific plan or image about my dream project, it would be any project that would make an impact and good change among all of us. It may be also any project that simply resonates emotionally with people.

Q: Describe your best work you designed in detail.

A: My best work I designed/illustrated would be more of a sentimental and personal creation, a gift to my partner when we still played on a Dungeon and Dragons campaign. I drew a full illustration of the DND party with everyone’s characters and companions creating a birthday

surprise party for him.

The drawing features my partner as the warlock holding an opened gift, me as the wizard, a gnome, and everyone’s companions with a party table with an easter egg featuring a Death Star cake. I made it lively, joyful and warm despite his mysterious nature.

In this illustration, I technically designed the characters myself, my own interpretation of what each character would look like based on the experiences we have had in games and descriptions from him and friends.

Q: Where do you get your design inspiration?

A: I draw inspiration from a mix of sources, from other artists but especially just stumbling upon design in daily life in general. I often try to analyze design when I see it, as well as studying the work of other artists which helps me explore different styles and techniques.

Q: Who among your contemporaries today do you most admire?

A: I admire my mother the most. She has always been very supportive and tries her best despite some hardships.

Q: What is your future goal as a designer?

A: As an artist, my goal is to continue developing my skills and exploring new mediums and techniques. While I may not see myself strictly as a designer, my main aim is to create visuals that can be enjoyed for others. I like helping to convey people’s ideas visually where they otherwise can’t from artistic limitations. Although I still have a lot to learn, I hope to collaborate with other creatives and perhaps illustrate for books, games, or other projects where my artistic skills can contribute to a larger narrative.

Q: How do you feel about your achievement in the BISTA Award?

A: It is incredibly rewarding to be included in the BISTA Award. It is a testament to the effort and dedication I put into my work. I worked hard on this project and am super proud of the final product. Additionally, in the fall, Byoung-il Sun came to my school, Purdue University, and we had the opportunity to participate in a workshop with him.

This experience was a very cool full circle moment for me because I participated in the workshop and am now recognized by BI. It not only validated my hard work but also provided me with invaluable insights and inspiration from a leader in the industry.

Q: What is the theme of your work?

A: I worked on creating a brand identity for a small truck-related business, a concept that has become increasingly popular in various public spaces.

What is the intention of your work?

A: I created a visual identity for “On The Roll” centered around a joyful character with a friendly face, embodying warmth and approachability. This character, combined with a vibrant color palette of white, blue, and red, reflects the lively and fun essence of my brand. The colors enhance the feeling of freshness, trust, and passion, crucial for my seafood-focused offerings. This concise identity invites my audience into a delightful experience, promising not only great food but also a warm, comforting, and welcoming brand atmosphere.

Throughout this process, the importance of consistency, creativity, and attention to detail was evident. Each phase built upon the previous ones, creating a strong, cohesive brand identity that resonated with the target audience. The journey was a testament to the power of branding in transforming a simple concept into a compelling story that engages and delights customers. Reflecting on this project, it’s clear that the success of the “On the Roll” brand was not just in its visual appeal but in the thoughtful integration of every element of the brand’s identity, from the mascot to the color palette, into a coherent and captivating narrative.

Q: Describe the process of creating your work.

A: Reflecting on the entire process of developing the “On the Roll” truck brand from initial ideation to final execution, it’s clear that this journey was both challenging and immensely rewarding. Starting with the ideation phase, where I juggled between three distinct concepts, the decision to go with the seafood roll truck for its potential for a fun mascot and to diversify my portfolio was pivotal. This initial choice set the tone for the entire project, emphasizing the importance of aligning the brand identity with a creative and engaging concept.

The logo ideation and refinement phase was crucial in laying the groundwork for the brand’s visual identity. Sketching and vectorizing logo ideas, and eventually refining them to depict the mascot in a way that perfectly encapsulated the brand name “On the Roll,” underscored the iterative nature of design. This process was not just about creating an appealing image but developing a symbol that could carry the brand’s story and appeal to the target audience.

The selection of touchpoints, visual motifs, names, color palettes, and other elements was a comprehensive exercise in brand building. Each decision, from the color scheme to the typography, was made with the brand’s identity and market positioning in mind. The choice of a dark blue color palette for its clean and sophisticated look further exemplified the thoughtfulness in crafting a brand that stood out in the crowded food truck market.

Creating the truck design, focusing on elegance and cleanliness while making the mascot the centerpiece, brought the visual identity to life in a tangible form. This step was about translating the brand’s essence into a physical presence that could engage customers in real-world settings. The meticulous attention to design details ensured that the truck was not just a vehicle for selling food but a vital part of the brand’s storytelling.

Finally, designing the information poster was an opportunity to distill and communicate the essence of the “On the Roll” brand comprehensively. The geometric approach adopted for the poster not only captured the brand’s dynamic and innovative spirit but also served as a testament to the cohesive visual strategy that was developed across all brand touchpoints.

Q: Describe the expected effects of your work.

A: The expected effects of my work include creating a strong, memorable brand identity that resonates with the target audience, driving customer engagement, and building brand loyalty. The cohesive visual strategy aims to establish “On The Roll” as a recognizable and beloved brand in the food truck industry, leading to increased customer satisfaction and business growth.

Q: What was your favorite subject in your school?

A: My favorite subject in school was photography, as it allowed me to explore my creativity and eventually get into graphic design.

Q: What is your design philosophy?

A: My design philosophy centers around creating visually appealing and functional designs that effectively communicate a brand's message and values. I believe in the power of simplicity, consistency, and attention to detail to create impactful and memorable designs.

Q: Who is your design mentor?

A: My mentors are my many professors and instructors, and I thank them for helping me become a stronger designer.

Q: What do you think is the most important part of design?

A: The most important part of design is understanding and empathizing with the target audience. Creating designs that resonate with the audience, meet their needs, and evoke the desired emotions is crucial for successful and impactful design. At the core, I am passionate about creating visually engaging content that resonates with audiences. Social media, advertisements, brand partnerships, branding, cool art, and photos are all aspects I focus on. If someone remembers me as "the guy that did BLANK," it is the biggest compliment, as it means I did my job right.

Q: What is your dream project?

A: My dream project is to work on a comprehensive branding campaign for a major international company, creating a visual identity that becomes iconic and globally recognized.

Q: Describe your best work you designed in detail.

A: One of my best works is the branding for “On The Roll.” The project involved creating a visual identity for a seafood-focused food truck. I developed a joyful character with a friendly face as the mascot, combined with a vibrant color palette of white, blue, and red to reflect the brand's lively and fun essence. The logo and truck design emphasized elegance and cleanliness, making the mascot the centerpiece. The cohesive visual strategy, from the logo to the information poster, created a compelling and engaging brand story that resonated with the target audience.

Q:  Where do you get your design inspiration?

A: I get my design inspiration from various sources, including nature, art, architecture, and everyday life. Observing different cultures and their unique design elements also provides fresh and innovative ideas for my projects.

Q: Who among your contemporaries today do you most admire?

A: I admire Jessica Walsh for her bold and innovative design style, as well as her ability to create visually stunning and thought-provoking work that pushes the boundaries of traditional design.
